Maria Domenica Mazzarello 01

Saint Maria Mazzarello or Mother Mazzarello (May 9, 1837 – May 14, 1881) was an Italian nun from Mornese. She is the co-founder of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians or Salesian Sisters with Saint John Bosco, one of the most numerous female religious congregation of the Catholic Church in the world, notable for their role in the education of young people in the five continents.

Mother Mazzarello was appointed by Don Bosco as the first general superior of the female branch of the first three groups of the Salesian Family. He envisioned a female part of the Salesian charisma for the young. From a rural family, Mother Mazzarello is a symbol of humbleness and obedience to the Lord and to the Church. With Fr. Pestarino, she was the leader of the Association of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate in her native Mornese, where she and her companions instructed rural girls. This Association was to be the cornerstone of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians.
