Maria Troncatti was born in Corteno Golgi, in the province of Brescia, on 16 February 1883 to a large family of mountain farmers. She grew up happy and hard-working among the fields and the care of her siblings, in a warm atmosphere of parental affection. The Salesian Bulletin came to Corteno and Mary, rich in Christian values, began thinking of a religious vocation. Initially her father disagreed but as soon as his daughter was of legal age, 21, he gave his consent. Mary asked to be admitted to the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians and made her first profession in 1908 at Nizza Monferrato.
Destined for missions in Ecuador During the First World War she attended health care courses in Varazze and worked as a Red Cross nurse in the military hospital. Following a violent storm, Maria promised Our Lady that if he saved her life, she would leave for the missions. Our Lady saved her and Sister Maria asked Mother General if she could go among the lepers. Seven years later, Mother Caterina Daghero sent her to Ecuador.
In 1925 she landed in the Bay of Guayaquil and reached Chunchi where she was a nurse and pharmacist for a short time. Accompanied by the missionary Bishop Comin and a small expedition group, Sister Mary and two other sisters entered the Amazon forest.
Among the Shuar Indios Their mission field was the land of the Shuar Indians in the south-eastern part of Ecuador. As soon as they arrived in Mendez, Sister Maria earned the esteem of the Shuar tribe by working with a penknife to save the daughter of a chief. She had been wounded by a bullet. They settled permanently in Macas, a village of settlers surrounded by the collective housing of the Shuar, in a small house on a hill. Just as Don Bosco was a father and teacher Sister Mary became a mother, and for 44 years she would be known as "Madrecita" by everyone.
A difficult work of evangelisation began in the midst of all kinds of risks. She was a nurse, surgeon, orthopedist, dentist and anesthesiologist, but above all a catechist rich in wonderful resources of faith, patience and Salesian kindness. Her work for the promotion of the Shuar woman flourished in hundreds of new Christian families, who for the first time could make a free personal choice as young spouses. She worked mainly in the field of education and health at the Pius XII hospital in Sucúa and in numerous clinics. She is the mother of the missions of the Apostolic Vicariate of Méndez: Mácas, Méndez, Sevilla don Bosco and Sucúa, making endless visits into the Amazon jungle.
Dies in an accident On 25 August 1969, Sister Maria was about to fly to Sucúa for a retreat. The plane crashed shortly after take-off. The Shuar Federation radio gave the sad announcement: "Our Mother, Sister Maria Troncatti is dead". Her body lies in Macas.
Blessed Maria Troncatti, FMA, to be Declared a Saint[]

(ANS – Vatican City, 25 November 2024) – On November 25, 2024, Pope Francis received His Eminence Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, in audience. During the meeting, the Holy Father authorized the promulgation of the decree concerning:
- the miracle attributed to the intercession of Blessed Maria Troncatti, a professed Sister of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, born in Córteno Golgi, Italy, on February 16, 1883, and deceased in Sucúa, Ecuador, on August 25, 1969.
With this act, Pope Francis has paved the way for the canonization of Blessed Maria Troncatti. The date for the canonization will be decided during an ordinary consistory.
“This news is a reason to give thanks to God and brings great joy to the entire Salesian Family, especially the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, the Diocese of Brescia, which gave birth to the future saint, and the Apostolic Vicariate of Méndez (Ecuador), where Maria Troncatti carried out her missionary work. Her canonization is a sign of hope for her powerful witness of transmitting life and faith to new generations and the indigenous peoples of the Amazon forest, which became her ‘homeland of the heart.’ She was a woman of reconciliation and peace, with a maternal spirit that touched hearts,” commented Father Pierluigi Cameroni, Postulator General.
Maria Troncatti was born in Córteno Golgi (Brescia) on February 16, 1883. As a young girl, she actively participated in parish catechesis and received the sacraments, developing a deep Christian faith that opened her to a religious vocation. Inspired by the Salesian Bulletin, Maria considered a religious life. Out of obedience to her father and parish priest, she waited until she came of age to request admission to the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. She made her first profession in 1908 at Nizza Monferrato. During World War I (1915–1918), Sister Maria trained in healthcare in Varazze and worked as a Red Cross nurse in a military hospital.
After surviving a flood, she vowed to the Virgin Mary that she would dedicate her life to missionary work if she was saved. In 1922, Mother General Caterina Daghero sent her to Ecuador. Sister Maria spent three years in Chunchi before venturing into the Amazon rainforest alongside Bishop Mons. Comin and a small expedition. She and two fellow sisters established their mission among the Shuar people in southeastern Ecuador, initially settling in Macas, a village surrounded by Shuar settlements.
Sister Maria faced numerous challenges, from the dangers posed by wildlife and turbulent rivers to the complexities of evangelization. In Macas, Sevilla Don Bosco, and Sucúa, her efforts blossomed. She served as a nurse, surgeon, orthopedist, dentist, anesthetist, and most importantly, as a catechist and evangelizer, displaying deep faith, patience, and brotherly love. Her work for the empowerment of Shuar women led to the formation of hundreds of new Christian families, with couples marrying out of personal choice for the first time. Known as the “doctor of the jungle,” she tirelessly worked for human and spiritual development, especially for women. She founded a hospital, trained nurses, and fostered reconciliation between settlers and the Shuar community.
On August 25, 1969, at the age of 86, Sister Maria passed away in a plane crash near Sucúa. She had devoted her life to love and service, even offering herself for reconciliation between settlers and the Shuar people. She once wrote, “Every day, I am happier with my missionary religious vocation!”
Declared Venerable on November 12, 2008, she was beatified on November 24, 2012, during the pontificate of Benedict XVI in Macas (Apostolic Vicariate of Méndez, Ecuador).
In the footsteps of Fr Giuseppe Quadrio, Maria Troncatti, Fr Carlo Braga[]
(ANS – Vervio) – The traditional commemoration of the Venerable Fr Giuseppe Quadrio (1921-1963) took place on 19 and 20 October 2024, promoted by the Sant'Ilario parish of Vervio and the Amici di Don Quadrio Association. On the evening of Saturday 19th in Tirano, Polish Salesian Fr Łukasz Pawłowski spoke on "Fr Quadrio and young people", presenting some educational experiences of Fr Quadrio's life such as the one among the sciuscià, street children, during his years of study in Rome, and the one among the young prisoners at the ‘Generala’ in Turin, whom he visited with the young Salesian clerics from the Crocetta He proclaimed the word too these young men and won them all over. “Who are we? Why are we here?" he pondered during a meeting in 1959. And he replied: “For one simple reason. I bet you'll never guess! We are here because we love you... We love you, because you are young, not for any other reason. We love you. And there is an even more beautiful and touching reason. We say this to you quietly, in confidence, with our hearts: because you have not always been fortunate, you have suffered and you are still suffering. We read it in your serious eyes, in your face as teenagers already riddled with suffering. Dear friends, life has been hard for you. We understand you. It wasn't always or all your fault. We would have done much worse in your place. Perhaps some of you may have been a little guilty. And who has never made a mistake in their life? But more guilty ones are those who are able and should, but have not helped and loved you enough. We are here tonight to make a dutiful act of reparation, that is, to ask you for forgiveness for all those who have hurt you, who have not loved you, who have not given you a fraternal hand. We are here to solemnly promise you that we will all do what we can, to prevent this from having to be repeated for you and for the other young men we can approach." Fr Pawłowski commented on Fr Quadrio's words, telling how Fr Quadrio's priestly and educational witness marked his vocation story and his educational ministry among young people, even difficult ones, such as in the Roman prisons of Rebibbia or in the prisons in Poland. For him, Fr Quadrio is a model and a friend who inspires his whole life and his mission as a Salesian priest. On Sunday 20 in the parish church of Vervio, Fr Pierluigi Cameroni, Postulator General of the Causes of Saints of the Salesian Family, presided at the Eucharist and, inspired by the Word of God for the day, presented three figures of holiness of the Salesian Family, all originally from those parts, who lived the style of Jesus: service. - The Venerable Fr Giuseppe Quadrio whose ordination holy picture presented a true program of spiritual and apostolic life: ‘Pray, brethren: O high and eternal priest, whose humble servant you have made vicar of your love, grant him a priestly heart similar to yours: forgetful of self, abandoned to the Holy Spirit, extensive in self-giving and merciful, passionate about souls for your love.’ - Blessed Maria Troncatti (1883-1969), a native of nearby Corteno Golgi (Brescia) and a missionary in the Amazon jungle in Ecuador among the Shuar Indians, recalling her extraordinary charity and caring motherhood for Salesians, to whom she spoke confidently, and as a mother would. Many of them testified: "If I am a priest, a Salesian, I owe it to her". And she instilled this love for priests and consecrated persons, including sisters: "Do not wait for them to ask, for they will not do so; prepare for them what they need". One of the missionaries of the time, Fr Giovanni Vigna, left us this testimony about Sister Maria Troncatti: “She is the very embodiment of evangelical simplicity and shrewdness. With what exquisite motherhood she conquers hearts! She finds a solution to every problem, one that is, in the light of the facts, always the best. She never forgets that she has to deal with weak and sinful beings. I saw her treat human nature in all aspects, even the most miserable: she treated them with the authority and kindness that was spontaneous and natural in her. What surprises me is that in everything and always she remained exquisitely feminine. More than that I would say – a virgin, the mother.” - Finally, the Servant of God Fr Carlo Braga (1889-1971), a native of Tirano, missionary in China and founder of the Salesian presence in the Philippines. Fr Cameroni recalled how one of the young missionaries of the 155th Salesian Missionary Expedition, Krešo M. Gabričević from the Province of Croatia (CRO), spoke of Fr Braga as a model of a great missionary whose lifestyle he wants to follow: "A model I wish to follow is the Servant of God, Carlo Braga, known as the ‘Don Bosco of the Philippines’ for his unique ability to embody the Salesian spirit in a different cultural context. His extraordinary humility and adaptability allowed him to build deep relationships with the people he served, respecting local traditions and bringing the message of Christ with joy and simplicity. He was able to combine education, faith and service with a heart open to all, without ever losing his closeness to the young and the poorest. Fr Braga not only taught, but also learned from the people with whom he worked, transforming his mission into an authentic exchange of love and trust.
Blessed Maria Troncatti celebrated in Corteno Golgi[]
(ANS – Corteno Golgi, 02 Settembre 2019) – The birthplace of the blessed Maria Troncatti (1883-1969), ie., Corteno Golgi (Brescia), thanks to the pastoral commitment of the parish priest, Fr Alessandro Nana, and to the great love of the whole civil and religious community for its distinguished citizen, wanted to commemorate and celebrate in solemn and participatory form the 50th anniversary of the birth in heaven of this Daughter of Mary Help of Christians, a missionary among the Shuar of Ecuador.
On 24-25 August 2019, various moments helped to recall the testimony of Sr. Troncatti, beatified 24 November 2012, and together underline the relevance of her message in this year in which the Pan Amazon Synod is celebrated and in the imminence of an extraordinary missionary month of October, wanted by Pope Francis on the occasion of the centenary of the promulgation of the Apostolic Letter Maximum illud by Pope Benedict XV (November 30, 1919).
A first sign, offered by nature, was a rainbow that enveloped the sky of Corteno Golgi on the evening of Saturday 24 August, as if to confirm the mission of Sister Troncatti as a woman of peace and reconciliation. Even 50 years ago, at the end of the missionary's funeral, a rainbow appeared in the sky of Sucúa (Ecuador), to seal the offer made of her life for the reconciliation between the Shuar and the white settlers.
On the same evening, a solemn concelebration was held in Corteno Golgi presided by the Postulator General for the Causes of Saints of the Salesian Family, Fr Pierluigi Cameroni, SDB, with the participation of several native priests of Corteno. In the homily, inspired by the Gospel of the day that spoke of the need to "strive to enter through the narrow door", Fr Cameroni recalled how Blessed Maria Troncatti not only dedicated her life to the little ones, to the poor, with a mother's heart, to the sick and to the missionaries, but above all how she gave herself in a gift of love for the good of the people to whom the Lord had sent her as a missionary.
Through six stages in especially meaningful places across town, an evocative Via Lucis followed which proposed the luminous testimony of this Daughter of Mary Help of Christians as a woman of faith, daughter of her land, announcer of the Gospel to children and to the poor, disciple of Christ on the Cross, devoted daughter of Our Lady, example of missionary charity.
On Sunday 25 August there were several celebrations. In particular, in the parish church, near the baptismal font where Maria Troncatti was baptized, the Christian community renewed its baptismal promises, asking, through the intercession of the blessed, that the grace of the baptism of each bear fruit in ways of holiness, and confirming the commitment missionary of the Church, in the announcement of salvation in Jesus Christ, who died and rose again.
Sister Maria Troncatti Museum: objects and photographs of saint's journey[]

(ANS – Sucúa, Ecuador, 29 August 2019) – Even after so many years, Sister Maria Troncatti continues to be a model for the life of a religious of these times; it is enough to note that Pope Francis elected her as a witness of the Pan Amazon Synod. To commemorate the greatness of this saint, the blessing of the museum of Sister Maria Troncatti in the city of Sucúa took place on the eve of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of her ascent to heaven. This site was built so people can learn about the life and missionary passion of this Salesian nun who first arrived in Ecuador in 1922.
The ceremony was attended by: Sister Cruz María Piña, FMA Provincial; Fr Ángel Lazo, Vicar of the Salesian Province of Ecuador; Enrique Delgato, Mayor of the Sucúa canton; several Sisters of the Provincial Council and a good number of people who came from various cities from across the country to visit and learn about the religious museum.
Sister Cruz María Piña said that a museum has the objective of showing what has been done in life and the echo that these actions have in eternity. "Everything we find in this place speaks of her great love for God which made her exclaim: 'Every day I am happier in my religious and missionary vocation ...'. Let us live this experience of contemplating the life and mission of Blessed Sister Maria Troncatti."
Before opening the museum's doors to the public, there was the cutting of the ribbon by the FMA Provincial, which was followed by Fr Lazo blessing the premises. The museum displays objects and photographs that visually present the journey of Sister Mary, especially together with the Shuar people.
One of the museum's spaces is dedicated exclusively to her work as a nurse, as she was a "doctor" for the body, but also for the soul. She did not devote herself exclusively to treating pains or treating illnesses, but for each of her "patients" she always had advice and an evangelizing word.
Fr Lazo underlined the Blessed's love for the missionary life and urged the young people present to commit themselves to following her example of life and go where God calls them. He also said that Sister Troncatti was designated as the "Protector of young volunteers."
25 agosto: 50° della morte della Beata Maria Troncatti[]

(ANS – Roma, 23 August 2019) - On 25 August 1969, in Sucúa (Ecuador), the airplane that was carrying Sister Maria Troncatti crashes shortly after take-off on the edge of that forest which for almost half a century was her "home of the heart", the location of her tireless donation among the Shuar people. Sister Maria thus lives her last flight: the one that takes her to Heaven! She was 86 years old at the time, years all spent on a gift of love. She wrote: "Of my religious missionary vocation, I am happier every day!"
Born in Còrteno Golgi on 16 February 1883, she learns through the Salesian Bulletin about the stories of missionaries and thinks about the religious vocation. She made her first profession in 1908 in Nizza Monferrato. During World War I she attended health care courses in Varazze and worked as a nurse. Following a violent flood, Maria promises the Madonna that if she saves her life she will leave for the missions. Grace obtained, Sister Mary asked the Mother General to go among lepers.
In 1922 Mother Caterina Daghero assigned her to the missions of Ecuador. When she came to Mendez, Sister Maria earned the esteem of the Shuar when she operated the chief's daughter, wounded by a bullet, with a penknife. The nuns settled permanently in Macas, a village of settlers surrounded by the collective housing of the Shuar.
Sister Mary remains in Ecuadorian territory for 44 years and will be called by all Madrecita. She is above all a catechist and evangelizer, rich in wonderful resources of faith, patience and fraternal love. Her work for the promotion of the Shuar women flourishes in hundreds of new Christian families, formed for the first time by free personal choice of young spouses.
From a simple and poor clinic, she manages to establish a hospital and prepares the nurses herself. She is a "doctor" for the body and the spirit: while treating or distributing medicines, she advises and evangelizes. With maternal patience she listens, fosters communion among the people and educates the indigenous and settlers towards forgiveness, offering for this her own life. "A glance at the Crucifix gives me life and courage to work."
On 24 November 2012 she was beatified in Macas, Ecuador.
In this year in which the Church shall celebrate in October 2019 a Synod of Bishops for the Pan-Amazonian Region entitled: "Amazonia, new paths for the Church and for an integral ecology", the blessed witness Maria Troncatti shines for being the instrument of mercy of God towards all the needy in body and spirit; instrument of peace and reconciliation.
